Shamanic Drum Making Workshop
Shamanic Drum Birthing Workshop
with Larissa Jay, Spring Willow Healing & Bianca Havukainen, Conscious Wellness with Bianca
About Drum Making:
Embark on the sacred journey of handmaking your own shamanic drum.
In a very small group, we will midwife you to create your own shamanic drum, made with your own hands and intentions.
About the Shamanic Drum / Frame Drum
The world’s oldest known drum is the frame drum.
As a round container that vibrates life, with its frame that is a circle, it is an ancient feminine symbol.
The Drum is pan-cultural, an instrument and medicine tool that spans across cultures from the early civilisations, and as such is one that is accessible to all people of all cultures. We acknowledge the earliest known origins of drummers being women in the ancient priestess cultures, and the long history of drumming as an oftentimes core element of culture, spirituality, and medicine around the world.

Flow of the drum making:
We gather in ceremony, setting intentions and creating sacred space for the day ahead.
You will choose the hide you will be working with (the hide actually chooses you). We will work with goat hides (depending on availability you can also have the option of kangaroo), and your choice of 15" or 18" drum frames made from Paulownia wood. We will then drop into a drum journey to connect to your animals (hide) and start the process of transforming and preparing your hides.
You cut your own drum face by hand from the hide; from the very start beginning to connect with the drum you are making.
While the hides are soaking and softening up for weaving, we will share in a discussion about the drum and the sacred medicine of the beings (materials) you are working with.
Once the hides are soft, the day is dedicated to you weaving your drum together, with intention, and fully supported in the process.
We expect to finish around 5 or 6pm, however leave the whole evening free so that you can finish at your own pace.
We recommend if possible to plan a gentle day the following day for the drum birth post-partum.
Options:
The drum making is with goat hide, ethically sourced to the best of our knowledge, and selected by us for quality. In our experience, goat hide makes a beautiful drum, both practically speaking as well as the energy of goat medicine being beautiful to work with. However, for those who have a particular calling towards working with a different type of hide, such as kangaroo or deer, you are welcome to ask us (with plenty of notice) and we may be able to source it for you as an alternative - noting that it is subject to availability and will need to be ordered ahead of time with deposit and cost difference.
